Atieno is all about fusion of fashion, function and heritage”

My name is Stephanie Atieno. I was born in the States however, my parents both emigrated from Kenya, East Africa and raised me in a rich and diverse culture. After finishing college and graduate school I started working in a corporate environment and that’s how this all began…

You see, I soon realized that getting dressed in the morning was not as fun as it used to be and shopping was a challenge. The clothes that reflected my personality were too casual or “out there” for work, and the clothes that were considered office appropriate were too stiff stylistically or too high-end for my wallet. I wanted to dress in a style that is eccentric and unique while still acceptable in a business casual setting and I became frustrated because I felt like I was compromising who I was to look “appropriate”.

As with most Kenyan girls, I have always had a love relationship with kitenge (or vitenge- plural) clothes. I loved the beautiful and diverse patterns, which hail from East Africa. The problem has always been that getting kitenge dresses and clothes required traveling to Kenya, which although I would like to go to more often, it’s not always possible. Thus, I created Stephanie Atieno, a fusion of professionalism with heritage. I want to give women like me the opportunity to purchase ready-to-wear kitenge clothing with the convenience of online shopping. I want to provide kitenge ready-to-wear that captures both eccentricity and business professionalism all rolled into one. Lastly, I want the clothes that I make to mean more than just look good I wanted them to do good and promote good. That is why we are committed to running a fair-trade business. No sweatshops or child laborer will ever be associated with our garments.

Finally, within each Stephanie Atieno garment two care tags exist, one for how to take care of the clothes and the other for how to take care of YOU, the wearer.  Each garment embodies a message on how you can keep yourself feeling good.  I want to promote women to take care of themselves the same way they take care of their clothes or even better!
